Every week there's a new headline: "AI Will Replace 300 Million Jobs." Or its opposite: "AI Will Create More Jobs Than It Destroys." Both are oversimplifications designed to get clicks.

I've spent the last three months talking to people whose jobs are actually being affected by AI — not economists, not CEOs giving keynote speeches, but real workers. A graphic designer in Cairo. A call center manager in Manila. A software engineer in Berlin. A translator in Barcelona.

Here's what I learned: the truth is messier than the headlines suggest.

The Jobs That Are Already Changing

Let's start with what's actually happening, not what might happen in 2035.

Translation is the most obviously disrupted industry. My friend Layla works as an Arabic-English translator. Two years ago, she charged $0.10 per word for marketing content. Now? Her clients are using LLMs for first drafts. She gets $0.03 per word — for proofreading the AI's output.

"At first I was angry," she told me. "Now I realize I was spending 80% of my time on the mechanical part of translation anyway. The AI does that. I focus on the cultural nuance, the tone, the idioms that the model always gets wrong. I earn less per word, but I process three times as much content."

She's not unemployed. But her job looks completely different.

But entry-level design work? The "make this logo bigger" type of job? Those are disappearing. Junior designers can't compete with AI for those tasks.

The Jobs That Are Surprisingly Safe

Then I talked to people whose jobs seem untouched.

Electricians, plumbers, carpenters. Nobody I spoke to in the trades feels threatened. "The AI can't crawl under my house to fix the pipes," one plumber told me, laughing. And he's right. Physical, hands-on, site-specific work requires dexterity, adaptability, and problem-solving in unpredictable environments. Robots aren't close to replacing that.

Nurses. Especially the ones I spoke to in intensive care. "AI helps me monitor patients," one nurse said. "But when a family needs someone to hold their hand and explain what's happening in plain language? That's not a machine's job."

Teachers. Not the lecture-giving part — that AI can already do. But the mentorship, the motivation, the ability to see that a student is struggling with something they're too embarrassed to ask about? Good teachers aren't going anywhere.

High-level strategy roles. A partner at a consulting firm told me: "AI can write a beautiful analysis. It cannot convince a skeptical CEO to make a difficult decision. That requires trust, relationships, and reading the room."

The Pattern I Noticed

After all these conversations, a clear pattern emerged. AI isn't replacing jobs. It's replacing tasks — specifically, the repetitive, predictable, pattern-based parts of any job.

Jobs that consist mostly of such tasks are being transformed the most. Jobs that involve physical presence, emotional intelligence, complex problem-solving in unpredictable environments, or high-stakes human interaction are the safest.

The real divide isn't between white-collar and blue-collar. It's between:

  • Pattern-based work (predictable, repeatable, data-intensive) ← AI is good at this
  • Situational work (requires adaptability, physical presence, human judgment) ← AI is weak at this

A radiologist's job is heavily pattern-based → AI is changing it fast.

A nurse's job is heavily situational → AI is helping, not replacing.

A junior lawyer reviewing documents → pattern-based → AI is disrupting this.

A senior litigator arguing in court → situational → safe for now.

What I'm Telling My Friends

When friends ask me whether they should worry about AI, I give them three pieces of advice:

1. Identify the pattern-based parts of your job and automate them yourself.

Before AI automates your job, use AI to automate the boring parts. The person who does this becomes more valuable, not less.

2. Double down on the human skills.

Communication, empathy, persuasion, leadership, creativity — these are becoming more valuable, not less. AI can write a persuasive email. It cannot build a real relationship.

3. Stay flexible.

The translator I mentioned now makes AI-generated marketing content in three languages and consults on AI translation quality. The graphic designer also teaches workshops on AI tools. The most successful people I spoke to didn't resist change — they adapted and found the new opportunity within it.

The Honest Conclusion

Will AI replace your job? Probably not entirely. But parts of it will change, and the rate of change is accelerating.

The most honest answer I can give after all these conversations is this: the jobs that survive aren't the ones that are hardest to automate. They're the ones where being human is genuinely valuable.

And that's not a bad thing to build your career around.
